Canada Reduces International Student Permit Cap by 10% for 2026
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has confirmed that the cap on international study permit approvals will be reduced by approximately 10% for 2026 compared to 2025 levels. This follows the initial cap introduced in 2024 and signals a continued tightening of Canada's international student intake.
The reduction primarily affects smaller private colleges and universities. Top-ranked universities such as University of Toronto, McGill University, and UBC are less affected but will also see some reduction.
Pakistani students are advised to apply to institutions with strong DLI standing and focus on high-quality universities to maximize their chances of permit approval.
The new requirements also include a higher proof of funds: CAD 20,635 per year for living expenses, plus tuition fees.
